I know what you’re probably saying, “Dammmmn Myeshia, back at it with the nipple showing!” And, I can laugh at it while understanding your sentiments. Some of you are probably even thinking, “is she showing her nipple for attention?” I would say, for the most part you’re right, but not for the reasons you’re thinking. For the Fall/Winter 2017 and 2018 lines, the cat walk was crawling with so many gorgeous models showing off one of the most beautiful things that makes them women, their nipples! Some of your favorite designers like: Michael Costello, Calvin Klein, and Mr. Michael Kors himself, had their models sashaying down the catwalk in sheer tops with no bras, and the only accessories were their nipples. As The Blonde Salad puts it, “The time has come to unite to feel free, and proud to be women!” and I say, “Here Here! I can definitely drink to that!” 🥂
Just because I decide to show my nipples does not mean that I am looking for sexual attention from a man, nor does it mean that a man has the right to touch me. That’s how rape culture manifests and besides, I already have a man. Instead, it is me accepting myself, my body, my confidence wholeheartedly and not being afraid to share it with the world. I don’t want to be put into a box with my style nor my womanhood. I don’t want to be afraid to express myself and style, because of patriarchal ideologies that tells me what a woman should or should not do. If I do decide to be subservient, then at who’s detriment am I doing it for? My own! We are literally in a digital age, where technology has allowed us creatives to tell a story with our art, to inspire others to be their best selves, and to teach us that we are the only ones who can keep us stagnant. So, instead of deciding to listen to others’ negative thoughts or expectations of me, I’m choosing to step to the rhythm of my own free spirited drum and freeing myself, one nipple at a time. Get it? Ha!
In no way, shape or form do I plan on harming any breast feeding babies by showing a nipple or two! However, I do hope to reach the woman who deals with insecurities or who doesn’t think she’s good or pretty enough due to society’s definition of her beauty. I want to tell that woman to forget society, that society is superficial and doesn’t like to see the true essence of a woman even when she’s staring it right in the face, that she is the creator and dictator of her beauty, and that the only opinion on her womanhood that should matter to her, is her own! No, I’m not telling her to free a nipple. I am encouraging her to go out and find what makes her happy, and to express her happiness and style anyway she pleases.
This #FreeTheNipple Trend is nothing new. Every year some fashion icon, model or celebrity decides to break the internet by showing a titty. We’ve seen it on the likes of Halle Berry, Gwyneth Paltrow, J Lo, our favorite Fashion Icon/Bad Gal Ri Ri, and so many more! If you didn’t know, then obviously you’ve been living under a rock. If this trend offends you, then you should probably check your own insecurities to figure out why does something so naturally beautiful about womanhood gets you so up in arms. This trend does not make one woman who embraces it less than a woman, nor the woman who doesn’t embrace it, more of a woman. They’re both equal, but just with two totally different styles, and that’s ok! If you are the kind of person who accepts it, then I welcome you and your open mind to the Free The Nipple Club!
